The Pancake Plait

You may have already seen the hype on Instagram but the new hair trend everyone wants to try is the pancake plait. Braiding has come back into style the past couple of years especially when the weather starts to get a bit warmer. Recently Kim and Khloe Kardashian have been sporting the french plait look which many have tried to re-create.

But now theres a new style to try, the pancake plait is a lot fatter and wider than a normal braid. It's a great way to get finer hair looking thicker. Also, having a messy finish to the braid looks great so theres no worry in trying to be perfect!

Why not try one of these braids with a bit of a wave to really work the bohemian, beachy style.

Design In A Nutshell

The other section of our required watching were short films from Brain Pickings, which told you about different and important design movements which have influenced the arts world.

Here are some of the facts I learnt-

The Gothic Revival – 1800s
- The church of England was becoming more popular and more churches needed to be built.
- The Gothic Revival was being used in architecture, high roofs, tall spires, arches and lancet windows.

The Arts and Crafts Movement – 1863
- The Industry Revolution was making people less creative because of machines being able to do the work faster and cheaper.
- This movement aimed to reverse this placing value on skill and quality of materials.
- William Morris was an influential figure in this movement, eventually bringing the movement to a wider audience.

Bauhaus Movement – 1919 to 1933
- Bauhaus was an art school, which gave its students training in many disciplines, offering a great variety of skills.
- The school operated against the communist Nazi view during the world war, however was quickly shut down. Before this teachers at the school were along the lines of Kandinsky and Klee.
- The Bauhaus building became a hallmark for modernist architecture, including large steel frames, minimalism and geometric lines.

Modernism
- A new way of looking at the world. A new way of designing and new materials applied to all creative expressions.
- Architecture used Concrete, Glass and Steel.
- The idea was to design a better society.
- American Industrial Design – Post Great Depression
- The idea was to make things look great so people wanted them, creating a mass consumption. - Shapes were stream lined so they were cleaner and friendlier.
- It lifted spirits as people were buying things to make them happy after years of not being able to afford
- New processes were used such as Stamping and Moulding. New materials were used such as Vinyl, Chrome and Plywood.

Post Modernism – 1972
- Believed in more than one method should be used in a design process or final outcome – ‘less is a bore’
- It challenged audiences when looking at pieces of work and architecture.

Perfume Documentaries

The past two weeks have been reading week for Fashion Communication and Promotion. We were given 4 books to read and some required watching. One of these is a BBC documentary on perfume split into 4 episodes.

1   Something Old Something New
2  Bottling the Memory
3  The Smell of the Future
4  Part 4 (Link cannot be found)

I feel personally that the documentary was quite hard for me to watch and keep interested in what they were saying because it was quite slow but I did learn some key facts:

   Guerlain’s idea: get them young to keep them
   Mothers Day: key day in perfume sales
   60% of business is made in the last quarter of the year
   In 2011 there were 1200 perfume launches
   The biggest selling tool is the bottle
   Perfume has about a years life to ‘make it’ if it doesn’t sell after this time then it moves to supermarkets and lower end department stores.
   Smells have colour and texture e.g smooth or rough, a spicy scent connotes red
   Givaudan is the worlds largest and leading fragrance and scent company
   Givaudan have a perfumery school called “the school of noses” which picks the best of the best to learn about perfume and work on jobs. If they graduate they have jobs lined up for them within the company. They are so picky sometimes the school has no students.
   What we like in a smell is determined by culture and environment
   Russians = rich and heavy
   Chinese = light and airy
   British = fruity
   Arabian =musky
   Musk was also popular in victorian England
   Brazilians = fruity and floral
   Brazil is the fastest growing fragrance market in the world

Innovation

Overall, I feel knowing some of these facts will help me in my next project when I am producing research material.
